I can only begin to tell everyone how much I enjoyed driving to DC this past Friday with Staci, Coqui, and Angel. We spend the day in beautiful sunshine, watching great capoeira, and hanging out with incredible people! I feel so blessed to have met so many new and interesting people through capoeira. Every day I am amazed at something that connects me back to my group; my CDO family.
I just want to say thank you to Brenda for getting me and Mia involved in Capoeira. Thank you to Julia and Carlos for helping us get hooked on the incredible workouts. Thank you to Mae for helping me learn something new every day, and to all my other CDO friends….thank you for letting me be a part of your world. I may not be the best capoeirista but what I lack in form, stamina, and ability, I try to make up for in heart, and admiration for all of you who truly kick butt!

Once upon a time…

This is my little story, please be soft on my words because this isn’t my native language. A few months ago, life decided to get my out of my routine and throw me across the ocean. I did travel in the US before, but never went to Pennsylvania state. I was meant to stay away from family and relatives for few weeks, and a lot of work to achieve. At the same period, I was also in the mood of getting back to a sport. I used to practise Capoeira sometimes ago so why not start again?
I knew that after the working days at the foreign factory, my only duty would be watching tv at the hotel and so I needed to find out something. After a quick check of my hotel location, I questionned my favourite browser for “Capoeira Lancaster”. I found a group from which I never had heard about, but I was willing to try. I decided to quickly attend a few training in my previous (now actual) class before taking my flight to the US, in order to prepare a bit my foreign capoeira experience.
Few weeks later, I arrived on a Monday night flight, but I couldn’t resist to give a try asap and got to the Tuesdays evening class. I was meesed up because opf the jet lag and was a bit afraid; I know you have good and bad people in all groups so you never know by who you will be welcomed…
But at the first glance, I felt that everything was fine, had a warm welcome by a lot of open minded people, friendly and curious about the stranger that I was. It was a good start!
I then had the opportunity to evolve with the group for a few weeks, and had a lot of fun. I was really impressed about the friendship inside the group. Also, I was impressed about the skills of each one, capacity to play instruments, to sing, the will of giving to capoeira the positive image it deserves in the surrounding neighbourhood.
A lot of people proposed me to attend some events, to teach playing instruments and all other cool things. I felt home, and I did appreciate very much.
This time in Lancaster gave me again the inner fire for capoeira when I got home. Moreover, I learned some tricks that seems usual in you group but not in mine, so friends got surprised when I got back in a Belgian roda… I wish you all could come for a while in my group, to give you back all the good things I received from you (and Im not talking here about any kind of Rasteiras or Martelos
).
I m happy to hear you group formalized with cordao de ouro and hope it is the beginning of a new and exiting story for you all.
Congratulations!
Nico (Palmito)
PS: Maybee in a week or three I’ll be able to jump in a roda for one night, will try!
Pennsylvania Capoeira Academy: Offical Opening Today!
Published by Touro | Filed under articles, blog, experiences, history, music, news, training
Yesterday, February 1, from 2-5pm Pennsylvania Capoeira, Grupo Cordao de Ouro, held a soft opening for the new Pennsylvania Capoeira Academy. The new location, 329 N. Queen St. (the Keppel Building) in Lancaster, is conveniently located 3 and a half blocks from the city square and is in a great location for the up and coming art and music scene in downtown Lancaster. Pennsylvania Capoeira Academy is located on the 3rd floor of the building but don’t let the height fool you; you can hear music playing from the streets, even with all the windows closed! The studio features finished hardwood floors and plenty of space to move around. The acoustics in the building aren’t bad either… did I mention I could hear the music from the street?
In addition to the changing areas and the small lobby-esque area featuring our school logo, the studio features a wall of windows which bring in the natural sun light and gives the studio a beautiful amber glow.
Tonight is the official opening of the Pennsylvania Capoeira Academy with beginner classes beginning at 6:00pm. Doors will be open sooner I’m sure… and as always, your first class is free! We only ask that (if you can, of course) bring a small donation as we are a fledgling martial arts group and can use all the support we can get in order to pay the rent and utilities. We welcome all comers and hope that you can join us for our opening!
Have you already given up your New Year’s Resolution? Want to lose weight, gain strength and endurance like you never have before? Are you looking for something more than just a workout? Do you need a strong group structure with friendly instructors of all levels? If you have answered “Yes” to any of these questions then you should head over to 329 North Queen Street in downtown Lancaster around 6 and visit the new Pennsylvania Capoeira Academy!

…And as it just so happens, a new group! Welcome to 2009 crew! This is going to be an exciting year for Pennsylvania Capoeira and the Pennsylvania Capoeira Academy. I love the fact that we have an “Academy” too, sounds very professional! As you can see there have been some updates to the site and I wanted to let everyone know that this version of our site should be much more user friendly. The blog is now on the forefront of the site and should be utilized as much as possible. Thoughts, stories, experiences… we want it all and we want it right here! To help you get started there is a Register and Login link in the sidebar to the right. If you have any questions feel free to post a comment or send a message directly to me… Touro!
In addition to the site updates, be sure to keep an eye on the schedule and the blog (that would be what you’re looking at now) to find out when classes begin at the Pennsylvania Capoeira Academy and for any events that we will be holding in the future. Pennsylvania Capoeira is extremely excited to see what 2009 brings. We hope that you will be with us to find out too!
See you in the roda!

What’s your story?
Published by cozinheiro | Filed under blog, experiences
One day in church I was doin’ rolls, cartwheels, and handstands for some little kids. A friend of mine named Nelson saw and asked me if I would like to join capoeira. I all ready knew what capoeira was and I was excited to try but work got in the way so I didn’t start for awhile when I did start it was at F&M. I remember danny teaching me ginga. I stayed for two more classes then they moved places and I wasn’t told about the move so I kept coming back to for two weeks and waited. I gave up waiting after that. After a few months I wanted to do capoeira again so I looked and found them again now I’m here to stay.
